Prelude Application Instructions
(Printer Friendly Version Here)
Over the past few years media blasting has become a popular tool for removing old finishes in preparation for applying a new coat of stain. However, media blasting significantly increases the porosity of the wood, thus allowing it to absorb much more stain than those wood surfaces that have been chemically stripped, sanded, or pressure washed. This high absorption results in a darker final stain color than that typically reflected by a color chart. In addition, wood is not uniform and media blasting often emphasizes the differences in wood grain absorption, even on a single log. This results in streaks and blotches due to varying amount of stain absorbed by different areas of the wood.
Prelude solves many of the potential problems created by media blasting. One coat fills the pores of the wood and provides a uniform surface film in preparation for the application of a pigmented stain. However it should be noted that After Blast is a sealer/primer and is not suitable as a clear, final finish.
Application Tips
- Prelude may be used on both interior and exterior media blasted surfaces.
- Make sure the surface is clean and dry before applying.
- Use only Lifeline brand water-based stains over Prelude.
Application Instructions
Inspection - Check for signs of deterioration and decay. Remove and replace or repair deteriorated wood. Unsound wood should be repaired prior to applying
Prelude. Contact any Perma-Chink Systems office for information about wood repairs.
Surface Preparation - All surfaces should be free from contaminates including media grit, dirt, dust, mold and mildew, old finishes, water repellents and wax. Borate applications such as Shell-Guard, Shell-Guard RTU or Armor-Guard must be accomplished before applying
Prelude. Follow labeled product directions.
If more than a week has passed since the exterior has been blasted or borate treated, wash down the surface of the logs with a solution of Log Wash™, rinse well and allow to dry before applying
Prelude.
Application - Stir thoroughly before and regularly during use.
Prelude can be applied with a brush or airless sprayer. Do not apply when the surface temperature is below 40° F or above 90° F. DO NOT APPLY TO HOT SURFACES OR IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT. Although
Prelude is clear, back brushing is required to work the product into the wood and to assure complete coverage of the blasted surface.
Once the Prelude has dried (typically two to four hours depending on weather conditions) you will be ready to apply any water-based Lifeline brand stain. Follow the product application directions when applying any stain.
Coverage Rate - One gallon of Prelude will cover approximately 200 – 400 square feet in a single coat application on media blasted wood depending on wood type, size of media grit used, and final porosity.
Cleanup - Clean area and equipment immediately with warm, soapy water. For sprayers and other commercial equipment, follow the manufacturer’s directions. For removing
Prelude that has dried, soften with alcohol or mineral spirits and then clean with warm water. Please do not pollute our environment. Dispose of containers and unused material in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Storage - Store Prelude out of direct sunlight and protect from freezing. Although
Prelude is freeze-thaw stable, if the product is accidentally frozen, allow to thaw, mix well and check for suitability of use before applying.
